Shangri La! 15 was the best ever!

Sorry to those who could not get in, it was packed to the sodding rafters.

Below is a review from Prestwich and Whitefield Guide, Thursday 20th Nov 08.

Arthur Brown, as the kids would say OMG OMG OMG!!

Sixties rock legend and psychedelic ringleader Arthur Brown is headlining at a very special Shangri La! cabaret night in
November. The original ‘god of hellfire’ behind the 1968 megahit ‘Fire’ will be making a diversion from his UK tour to play
none another than the Prestwich Church Institute on 7th November!

Renowned for his flamboyant, theatrical style (and setting fire to his own hair on stage!), Brown has collaborated with
Hawkwind, Bruce Dickinson and The Alan Parsons Project. His debut album ‘The Crazy World of Arthur Brown’ (produced by
Pete Townsend) was a big hit on both sides of the Atlantic in1968. Alongside an illustrious rock career, he has appeared in the
Who’s rock opera Tommy and more recently, as a priest in the video for The Darkness song, "Is it just me?" in 2007.

Arthur was amazing. All the way from Portugal for what turned out to be his ONLY live gig (apart
from his superb cameo in NICO ICON PLAY at the Lowry), when we were all saying "Well, I'm
not sure what he'll play, but surely not Fire?" We were wrong. With the help of the audience
(who played the part of the organ), Arthur delivered a stunning 'acca' rendition of the 60s classic.
160 people chanting "...der der deerrrrrrrrrrr, der, der". Mega, and what a nice chap too. Welcome
back any time.

Tom Hingley

The Inspiral Carpets frontman got the night rocking again; the shock of Arthur's performance
had barely sunk in!
Tom delivered his rip-roaring new blues-esque tunes but couldn't resist a bit of Inspirals nostalgia,
brilliant. Support the Hingley,

Nico Icon Band performed a selection of Velvet Underground and Nico tunes from
NICO ICON PLAY, which has done rather well at the Lowry Theatre. For more information click here
